Where we are: Varese Ligure |
|
Varese Ligure is the
small – and delightful – capital of the Val di Vara, an
area where respect for the environment is the key of a
daily philosophy of living. Along the winding course of
the Vara stream an harmonious medley of nature, the work
of man, silent trails, pastures and hospitality proudly
opposes the threat of pollution and the frantic rhythms
of stress and pointless competition.
Varese Ligure, in fact,
is the first European municipality that has been
acknowledged by important ecology and sustainability
certifications – a commitment for excellence and
innovation acting as a benchmark for other European
regions.
An easy reach from the Brugnato highway exit,
Varese Ligure (350 mts.
a.s.l.) stands at the crossroads of a network of tracks
heading to the Pianura Padana (the Cento Croci and Bocco
passes feature among the hubs of the ancient Ligurian
road system). 2,200 inhabitants live in the many hamlets
siding the main centre, each of them rich in pleasant
corners, excursions and gourmet stops.
Vineyards, chestnut groves, flocks, cattle, beehives…the
setting is a painting of an Impressionist artist. On the
other hand, the repute of the central settlement is due
to its extraordinary round layout (the Borgo Rotondo), a
joy for the eye. The Fieschi (lords of the place in the
13th century) developed this peculiar urban concept with
a view to the defence and presidium of an area whose
economy (trades, handicrafts, agriculture) was steadily
growing. The vicissitudes of the powerful household saw
many ups and downs, till in the tragic year 1547, after
the failure of the famous plot, they were finally
defeated by the Doria.
The traces of several military, economic and religious
seasons still show everywhere – shady porticoes,
decorated façades, palazzi, churches, castles and trails
all convey an atmosphere of magic.
The pleasure of choice is left up to you so… have your
pick! Enjoy a vacation in history, nature and culture.
Whether you belong to the family&kids type or to the
sports kind, the area abounds in opportunities –
trekking, mountain biking, horse riding, agreeable car
tours and easy walking. Last but not least, local tables
celebrate the recipes of tradition in a cuisine du
terroir plenty of leeks, legumes, potatoes, chestnuts
and mushrooms. Gourmet shopping includes cheese and
honey, the trademarks of the “Valle del biologico” (organic
valley). |
